Twenty-four volunteers tackled Great Wall Trail this morning, kicking off our summer foliage maintenance season in a big way.
At seven miles long, Great Wall is the longest trail in the FATS system, so it’s no small task.
Armed with 3 DR mowers and 7 string trimmers, our crew worked their way down sections of the trail, clearing back the summer growth. We have a few small touch-up items that will be wrapped up this week, but today’s work completed the vast majority of the project.
A special welcome to our first-time volunteers. We hope this was the first of many work parties with SORBAcsra.
It is always great to see mountain bikers and runners volunteering side by side, working together to improve the trails we all enjoy.
Working in the Georgia heat and humidity isn’t easy, but keeping the trails clear and enjoyable for everyone who rides, hikes, and runs them is worth the effort.
We couldn’t have done it without this amazing team of trail warriors:
Louis Stevenson
Mirriam Tolston
Greg Miller
Melania Valesquez
John Pilcher
Drew Johnson
Jeff Lippe
Tim Whatley
Joe Pitta
Todd Snider
Steve O’Connor
Chris Bell
Pete Hill
Charlton Hill
Jerry Dickson
Gabe Hoffman
Edwin Scott
John Atwood
Kevin Parrish
Jacob Scheuermann
Kim Scheuermann
Jackie Sanders
Daniel Allen
Angela Allen
After the work party, volunteers cooled off with cold, wet towels and ice-cold Gatorade before enjoying hot dogs, chips, and dessert. It’s our small way of saying thank you to the volunteers who gave up part of their weekend to care for these trails.
Up next: Brown Wave Trail on Saturday, July 18
Can you lend a hand? If you’re tired of battling overgrowth—especially those stickers—while you’re out on the trails, come join us for a few hours. No experience is necessary, and we’d love to have you on the team.
